WHAT’S HAPPENING | Our Town

Barbara Heller is the Chief Conservator of the Detroit Institute of Arts and is responsible for the conservation research, scientific analysis, and treatment and outreach program. She joined the staff in1976 as paintings conservator and assumed her current position in 1985. She attended the Museum Management Institute, University of California at Berkeley; and has earned academic credentials at Olivet College, University of Michigan, Wayne State University and Harvard University.

Barbara lectures, publishes, and serves on the board of directors and in advisory positions for several professional regional, national and international organizations. Her volunteer activities in the arts include serving on the Birmingham ’s Public Arts Board, the Michigan Legacy Art Park Board of Directors, and the Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum Advisory Board. She was an art judge for the Meadow Brook Hall Concours d’Elegance in 1990 &1999 and at the Cranbrook Concours d’Elegance in 2004 . Her most recent volunteer activities include CT-DAP (Cass Tech Development and Preservation Society) and the planning committee for the August 2007 Cass Tech High School Centennial Celebration.

Barbara attended Interlochen Summer Arts Program for 6 years, graduated from the Commercial Art curriculum at Cass Tech, and was an art history, studio art and French major in college.
