Classes | Ballet & Jazz School

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Creative Dance - Focuses on core elements of dance; spatial relationships, body parts, shape and time. Students are able to incorporate natural creativity. Teaches classroom etiquette, social skills and basic locomotor movements.

Pre-Ballet - A gentle introduction to the timeless tradition of classical ballet. Using the Royal Academy of Dance training method, children learn age-appropriate ballet steps and terminology. Musicality and listening skills will be developed through imagery and some creative movement in a classical ballet context. Politeness and courtesy toward others stressed. Children gain poise and self-confidence in a nurturing atmosphere.

Primary Ballet - A continuation of pre-ballet and preparation for Classical Ballet. Dancers develop musicality, grace, self control and begin to demonstrate an understanding of body placement and terminology, essential to the study of all genres of dance.

Classical Ballet - A traditional style of ballet which stresses the academic technique developed through the centuries of the existence of ballet. It is based on precise conventional steps performed with graceful and flowing movements. Examples of Classical Ballets are Coppelia, the Sleeping Beauty, the Nutcracker and Swan Lake.

Jazz - Isolates body parts and has quick weight changes. Various styles such as traditional (uses improvisation and is influenced by rhythms of jazz music), musical theater (Broadway style), hip hop (seen in most music videos), lyrical (balletic in style, choreographed to lyrics), and modern (expresses complex emotions and abstract ideas).

Tap - Isolates the foot, creating rhythmic patterns by clicking taps on the heels and toes of the dancer's foot. Various styles include rhythm tap, buck-and-wing, Broadway, jazz, soft shoe and clogging.

Sports Conditioning - This high energy class for boys and girls includes specific exercises designed for the athlete. Helps increase mobility and flexibility, range of motion, balance and agility, and cardiovascular development. Students will gain self confidence and a positive attitude toward team sports.
